Plain-language definitions for the terms shoppers meet when comparing tents and camping systems.
When choosing a premium shelter like a Coody or RBM tent, understanding the specifications is key to maximizing your comfort in the wild. This glossary cuts through the marketing jargon, providing plain-language definitions for the most common camping and glamping terms. Whether you are comparing hydrostatic head ratings or learning how to care for Technical Cotton (TC) canvas, this guide will help you build the perfect all-season camp. A breathable canvasLike Technical Cotton (TC), which allows interior moisture vapor to escape can reduce condensation, but it cannot make moisture disappear.
This glossary explains the terms used across Coody camping and glamping guides. Model-specific figures should always be checked on the current product page or manual before setup, inflation, heating, or travel.
Quick Term Index (A-Z)
- Air beam: An inflatable structural member that replaces a rigid tent pole. Construction materials and recommended pressure vary by model.
- Canvas / Technical Cotton (TC): A premium woven cotton-polyester fabric. Unlike standard nylon, TC canvas breathes naturally, keeping the interior noticeably cooler in summer and warmer in winter, while eliminating annoying wind-flap noise.
- Condensation: Water that forms when warm, moist air meets a colder surface. Ventilation, site choice, and moisture control help manage it; no tent fabric eliminates it.
- DWR: A durable water-repellent surface treatment that helps water bead and roll off. It is different from the waterproof coating or construction beneath it.
- Footprint / ground sheet: A protective layer placed under the tent floor. It should remain inside the tent outline so exposed edges do not collect rainwater.
- Guy lines and stakes: The external tensioning and anchoring system. Correct placement matters because a tent's frame is only one part of its wind stability.
- Glamping: A style of camping with resort-style amenities. In tent design, it means prioritizing standing headroom, breathable materials like TC Canvas, and space for real beds, furniture, and climate control.
- Hot Tent: A specialized winter shelter equipped with a fire-resistant stove jack, designed to safely accommodate a wood-burning tent stove for cold-weather camping.
- Hydrostatic head: A laboratory measurement, stated in millimeters, of the water pressure a fabric resists before leakage. It does not by itself rate a complete tent.
- PVC air tube: The inflatable frame material specified for current Coody Familia and RBM Panda models.
- Rainfly: An outer weather layer that helps shield the main canopy from rain, snow, sun, and debris. Materials and waterproof ratings are model-specific.
- R-value: A comparative measure of a camping mattress's resistance to heat transfer. ASTM F3340 standardizes the laboratory test; real-world comfort also depends on the sleeper, bag, ground, and weather.
- Stove jack: A heat-resistant chimney port built into a stove-ready tent. It does not make every stove or installation safe; the tent and stove manuals still control.
- TPU window: A transparent thermoplastic polyurethane panel used for light and visibility. A TPU window is not the same component as an inflatable air tube.
- Weathering: A manufacturer-directed wetting and drying process used with some cotton-rich tents to help threads and fibers settle around stitch holes. It is not required for every fabric.

The current Coody inflatable line uses a published operating range of -10 °C to +40 °C (14 °F to 104 °F). After use below 0 °C (32 °F), the tent must be dried completely indoors in a warm, dry space before storage. This handling rule does not turn the temperature range into a comfort rating.
